Why so much, you may ask? After all, I could do this myself or ask a family member or friend with a camera.

There are two types of photographers in this world, which one would you like to hire?

  1. Turn and burn: low-rates, mid-quality, not very creative in poses or interactions, lacks professionalism, blurry or blown-out photos, will get the job done but the images may not be memorable, wall-worthy, or most importantly, your senior may not be happy with what was captured. Poor communication skills, not very timely, "natural-light only photographer". Most likely doesn't have experience with difficult lighting situations, doesn't understand locations and prompts, and may have difficulty using light and external light sources to their advantage to craft a beautiful image. May even suggest Walgreens, Costco, Shutterfly, Walmart or even Staples for the printing of photos. Will provide an abundance of images that don't wow you.
  2. Service-level pros: Proven track record of results, higher rates, more refined poses, understands movement and how to properly make the subject look flattering. Comfortable in difficult lighting situations, fluent with OCF (off-camera flash) to help the subject "pop" from the background, beautiful depth of field usage (blurry backgrounds so the subject is sharp), creative poses, beautiful locations at the right time of day, comfortable doing studio and outdoor work. Highly-refined processes that lead to stunning results that the client and senior are happy with. Excellent communication skills, timely, trustworthy and professional. Highly invested in equipment, latest trends, technologies, and education. Understands how to properly post-process images, and works with top-notch printers that produce stunning results (Bay, WHCC, Millers, Luxe). Lastly, understands that this is perhaps the most important time in your young adults' life and you want something magical captured that you and they will forever be proud of to look back upon. And finally, comfortable submitting final file of choice to the yearbook committee for usage.
