A step back into real Gold Rush history

Digging through my photo archives recently reminded me of my visit to the Gold Bug Mine in Placerville, tucked away in the hills of El Dorado County, California. If you’ve ever wondered what it feels like to walk into a real 19th-century hard rock gold mine, this spot brings that history to life.

Originally opened in 1888 as the Hattie Mine, the Gold Bug is the real deal — not a replica. Today, you can walk more than 300 feet into the mountain on a self-guided audio tour. The moment you step inside, the temperature drops, the air gets crisp, and the timbers and rock walls make you feel like you’ve time-traveled straight into the late 1800s.

The mine is part of the 60-acre Gold Bug Park, owned and operated by the City of Placerville — fun fact, Placerville is the only city in California that owns its own gold mine. The park includes:

  • The historic Joshua Hendy stamp mill
  • A working blacksmith shop
  • Hiking trails through oak and pine forest
  • Gem panning for kids (and adults who still secretly want to strike it rich)

It’s gritty Gold Rush history mixed with that classic Sierra foothills charm — and it’s a perfect pit stop if you’re heading up Highway 50 toward Lake Tahoe.

Below are the photos from my visit — tunnels, machinery, textures, and the kind of details that make you appreciate California’s mining past in a whole new way.
